Alpine Ski Boots FAQ
Ski boots are sized in Mondopoint, your foot length in centimetres; Salomon says most skiers buy boots too big and suggests going half a size smaller if you're between sizes. Standing up, your toes should just brush the front (HEAD), and when you flex forward your heel shouldn't lift (Salomon). Atomic describes the right feel as a firm handshake: snug, never painful.
Flex is how stiff the boot is when you bend forward into it: softer is more forgiving, stiffer transmits your movements to the ski faster, and heavier or stronger skiers go stiffer. Salomon's guide is roughly 60–90 for beginner men, 90–110 intermediate and 110+ advanced (60–70, 70–90 and 90+ for women), and Tecnica's bands are similar. Salomon and Atomic both say flex isn't standardized, so compare numbers within one brand only.
Last width is the inside width of the forefoot, measured on a size 26.5, and HEAD says it runs from about 93 to 104 mm. Salomon calls 96–98 mm narrow, 100 mm average and 102 mm wide, and Tecnica's LV, MV and HV lasts span about 93–98, 99–100 and 103 mm. Too wide won't hold your foot; too narrow will hurt.
Yes, and how far depends on the brand: Atomic Memory Fit heats the shell, cuff and liner and can widen the forefoot by up to 6 mm, Salomon Custom Shell HD lets a bootfitter reshape the shell in about 10 minutes, Tecnica C.A.S. liners are oven-moulded and its shells can be punched, and K2's Method shell and cuff are heat-mouldable. HEAD liners are fully mouldable. We do liner and shell moulding and boot punches in store.
HEAD, Atomic, Salomon and K2 all recommend a professional boot fitter rather than buying by shoe size, and Tecnica trains partner bootfitters through its Fit Lab program. See our boot fitting service and why boot fit matters.
