Car Camping in Achray
I decided to take advantage of the warm autumn weather and spend a night solo car-camping at Achray Campground!
Since I had my choice of waterfront sites, I set up between two of the beautiful beaches so I could easily explore and enjoy the area. The sun sets across the lake from the campground, soaking the shoreline in glorious warm light all afternoon.
After a quick set-up of the Oru Inlet folding kayak - just 3 minutes from box to boat - I was ready to paddle. I followed the shore for a couple of kilometres, admiring trees with colourful autumn leaves and looking for wildlife. I crossed the lake to find some shade to cool down, admiring the campground from afar. I came across a group of happy frogs soaking up the sunshine in the warm shallows, then paddled back to camp just in time to squeeze in a quick hike before dinner.
I love exploring the amenities that campgrounds offer, and was really impressed with what I found here! The Achray Historic Site Exhibit is a small museum that used to house the team of rangers posted in this part of the park. After checking this out, I explored The Jack Pine trail. A short out-and-back path leads you to the location where artist Tom Thomson was inspired to paint his work, “The Jack Pine”, and the inspiration was contagious!
Since my site was just a short walk away, I lingered for a while enjoying a drink while admiring the shifting colours of the setting sun. I love that this campground is a radio-free zone and does not allow generators to run, meaning the quiet serenity was perfectly preserved throughout the evening and morning.
There’s something so special about waking up to the morning sun dancing on the lake’s surface, casting shimmering reflections into the cozy comfort of my car. After enjoying breakfast on the beach, I packed up to head to the Barron Canyon hike on my way out of the park. The falling golden leaves enticed me towards the impressive views down into the canyon. I look forward to returning to check out the canyon by kayak, one day!
